GRAND CANYON RAFTING TRIP WITH FOND DU LAC COUNTY AUDUBON
Come to the public library on October 8 from 6:30 to 7:30 pm in the McLane Room for a presentation on the trip. The full details, pictures, costs, etc. will be covered. The trip is open to members and non-members 18 years and older.
The trip will take place June 18 through the 27th of 2010.

HEAR AND BE “HERD”!

Here’s your chance to make a difference.
There will be the DNR Public Hearing on the proposed expansion of Rosendale Dairy here in Ripon. The facility wants to double the number of “animal units” to 8000 while also decreasing the frequency they test local groundwater for contamination. This factory farm has already been cited for multiple violations by the DNR. To let the facility proceed would do immense damage to local environmental quality, particularly in terms of water and air quality.

Ripon Public Library & Ripon Technology, LLC is having a Computer Recycling Fundraiser from November 23 through December 4.

Recycling tickets now available for a $5 donation to Friends of the Library. For each computer, monitor or printer you would like to dispose of, there would normally be a fee of $10 at Ripon Technology, LLC. From November 23 through December 4, $5 of that $10 will be donated to Friends of the Library. Accessories such as keyboards, mice and cables are accepted at no extra charge. Contact Ben at the library, 748-6160, for more information.

Batteries (cell phones, rechargeables, and regular) can be recycled locally at the following places: Please note store hours and types of batteries.

Staples - All batteries. Store hours are weekdays 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Radio Shack - Only rechargeable batteries. Store hours are weekdays 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to
8 p.m., and Sunday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

“Menu for the Future” Study and Discussion Series was a great success! FOND DU LAC, the Open Circle Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Fond du Lac sponsored a six week small group discussion series for everyone in the Fond du Lac area wanting to sort out the many and often confusing and contradictory messages about food choices these days. The meetings were held at 7:00 P.M. at the Open Circle fellowship hall, 19 E. Third St, beginning with an introductory meeting on Thursday, May 7. Over 20 individuals attended the discussion series. The course was completed on June 18th. Participants in the series examined the ecological and economic impacts that have accompanied the changes in how we grow and prepare food and considered how individuals can make choices that promote personal and ecological well-being through a more just and sustainable food supply. The study guide for the series was developed by the Northwest Earth Institute (www.nwei.org) and details of the issues covered in the six sessions can be found on their website.

There are two ways to visit area businesses that are generating energy or using energy efficiently:

Guided bus tour: Board a coach bus to visit five select sites with UW-Extension. Cost is $10 (includes information packet). Pre-paid registration is required; capacity is limited. Contact UW-Extension at 920/929-3173 to register.

Do it yourself: Drive or carpool to the sites on the tour that interest you most. Each site will have a greeter and information about the featured energy technology. Sites will give a guided tour every 20-30 minutes or have an open-house format.This option is free, and registration is not required.

Nett Land & Development, Inc. (County Rd. H & Pheasant Run): Tour Pheasant Run Subdivision, one of the county’s only conservation-design housing developments. With slightly smaller lots & shared open space, the concept offers municipalities & residents more green space.

Horicon Bank: (854 E. Johnson St., FdL) Learn about the newly installed ground-source heat pump (geothermal) system, why the bank chose to install it, and how it operates.

Vir-Clar Farm (bus only): The anaerobic digester at this dairy converts manure from 1300 milking cows into electricity, compost, & animal bedding.

Dr. Orvis Johnson Dental Clinic: (825 Prospect Ave., North FdL) Show your happy teeth as you view this pioneering DIY active solar system. Outside a prairie catches storm water runoff and trees insulate the building.

Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant: (700 Doty St., FdL) The City of Fond du Lac recently reconstructed this energy efficient facility which now includes sludge digesters which produce methane to fuel treatment boilers.

Wildlife Acres: (Hwy 151 & County V) Lot orientations in this subdivision maximize possibilities for houses to be built with passive solar systems and geothermal closed-loop pond systems. A stocked retention pond can be used for fishing and watering lawns.

J.F. Ahern: (855 Morris St., FdL) This mechanical contractor earned LEED Gold, a national designation of environmental excellence for construction processes, materials, and function with this showcase office. Tour participants will see the “greenwater” system that captures and reuses rainwater, an efficient ice storage system for cooling, and the uniquely designed atrium with low-VOC paints, natural lighting, and indoor air quality features.

Cedar Ridge Wind Farm: (W3458 Hwy 45, Eden) Learn about the 41 turbines in the Towns of Empire & Eden that produce about 68 megawatts of electricity for Alliant Energy – enough to power about 17,000 homes a year.

Culvers on East Johnson: (969 E. Johnson, FdL) Already built to exceed energy efficiency standards, the restaurant is participating in an Alliant Energy/Focus on Energy pilot-project which evaluates the building, suggests efficiency improvements, and offers financing and incentives to implement the changes.

Seed Collection Workshop Saturday, October 24 from 10:00-12:00 Our educational seminars continue with seed collecting at the Arboretum. Meet at the shelter for a discussion on seeds including when and how to collect your favorite native flowers and grasses. Participants will walk through the prairie and learn how to identify plants in the seed stage, collect seed, and then clean it in the shelter. Some of the seed will be broadcasted in bare areas in the prairie; some will be available to take home. Please bring work gloves, scissors and paper bags of all sizes. For questions, please call Connie Ramthun, Education Coordinator for the Gottfried Prairie and Arboretum at (920) 533-8939. Connie has been working with native plant seed production since the mid-1980s and will gladly share her knowledge with you. This program is free and open to the public Other classes during the past summer included Landscaping with Native Plants, Invasive Species, a Prairie Hike, Wildflower ID class, and Fall Wildflower Walk. We were able to offer these classes with the help of We Energies, through the Wisconsin Energy Corporation Foundation. We hope to continue offering classes in 2010 starting in January. On Memorial Lawn facing the busiest part of campus we'll be creating a massive 350 out of soon to be recycled bottles and cans. Ripon College is going to be on break during the 24th so we'll be holding the action on October 12. Check out 350.org for more information about the October 24th 350.org Day of Action!

The Environmental Group of Ripon (EGOR) is a Ripon College student organization with the goal of promoting environmental awareness and education on campus, as well as encouraging sustainability. Past events include but are not limited to the following:
